The theme is laid out at the beginning of the movie. Right afterward Hobbes comes across another murder that is linked to Hobbes. It turns out Reese was possessed by a demon which was released upon his death and takes over one person after another to continue his work.
Not only that but the demon has a grudge against Hobbes so he constantly calls him and taunts him with new murders. The film eventually becomes like a haunting as the demon follows Hobbes around seeking revenge.
The movie is really good. Denzel begins hunting for the killer but becomes the hunted himself. The twist at the end is devilish as well.
