the thing called love part surf2go.eu4The movie is campy and cheesy, but in the best ways. With early performances from Sandra Bullock and Dermot Mulroney, the foursome of friends at the core of the movie makes for an interesting tale of growing up and trying to make it in the music industry.
It also focuses on the songwriters rather than the singers, which makes it way ahead of its time. If for no other reason than it was one of River Phoenix's final films and he plays a country music James Dean, you should watch it.
I would have given it four plus Great movie. I would have given it four plus stars. But this is and the pickens are slim in movie land.
Movies touted as "great" are thin as water. This movie has what we oldsters used to call moxie. Plus, Lord of mercy, we get to see River Phoenix shining with so much promise.
Man oh man, I wanted this kid to grow up and continue to show us what he was made of. He's outstanding in this film. Young, tentative a bit, the acting.
But sincere and earnest. I'll miss him forever. Sandra Bullock does her usual which is always charmingly winning.
McDermott is all heart ache and longing. Fun cameos from country music greats. I'm a soul sister but I like a little country music now and then when its soulful.
By the end of the movie when the credits roll I'm sanging along, belting out a fine country song. Enjoy a film that's got good-to-great acting, an especially good screen play, and a whole lot of heart.
I saw it when it was first released and I watch it for the nostalgia now. This was a time in the early 90s where the 80's were still very much alive.
It was a simpler, sweeter time. And, River.. River Phoenix was the king of smoldering subtle and fathomless emotional expression.
His quiet face conveyed things. From the homey "Bluebird Cafe" run by a wise 'Mom and Pop' duo who are in the know about the biz, to the sweet-and-then-steamy, oh so romantic love story between James and Miranda, what is not to love!?
Oh, and here is Sandra Bullock at her best-friend-next-door best, adorable, funny, solid. If you need to lighten up, relax, and watch a fun little story reminiscent of things you miss, this is it.
Who does not love River Phoenix. The acting in the movie is great. Who does not love River Phoenix?
Such a sad end to his career. Have seen this movie multiple times and introduced it to a second generation who all love it as well.
Well worth the 80 minutes of entertainment it offers. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I wouldn't talk on this picture without refering the "quarrel" about the priority of value of the guitar.
The movie is made of an endless confusion among of the the four friends. Perhaps here are the reazon why this picture is delighting.
One person found this helpful. While this film flopped! My awareness of its existence came to light in the mid s when it was broadcast on UK television in the days of analogue.
In this way, what is portrayed is a highly competitive music environment that exhibits and focuses on the varying levels of talent and experience among these individuals.
Ultimately, what we see unfold are the complex relations of human interaction through comedy and song that express discourses on matters of the heart in which All are invariably crossed in love.
Finally, be prepared for a narrative that offers a strong female lead in the casting of a young Samantha Mathis that is coupled with the phenomenal acting talents of the late River Phoenix final film , Dermot Mulroney and Sandra Bullock.
The DVD contains a few extra-textual features on the films production for fans that take pleasure in those additional pieces of knowledge as well as the original theatrical trailer.

Was this review helpful to you? We tried to play by the rules of that. We tried to walk a sometimes difficult tightrope.
Todd McCarthy of Variety magazine wrote: "Perhaps there's not much new to say about the dues and disappointments involved in breaking into the country music scene, but the scenes are fresh and the emotions real in Peter Bogdanovich's tune-laden, mixed-mood drama.
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it 1 out of 4 and wrote: "Perhaps no one could have saved Phoenix, who was not lucky enough to find a higher bottom than death.
But this performance in this movie should have been seen by someone as a cry for help. The film debuted in several Southern markets.
It was expected to open wider in autumn but Paramount decided against this following the death of River Phoenix. The movie ultimately ranked among the least profitable films of There was a kind of general worry about that.
I guess that is the thinking that prevailed. It's pretty disappointing, but you know, I've learned to go on. The director felt the death of Phoenix affected watching the movie.
It had a hopeful quality and now it doesn't. The ending is ambiguous, but because River died, it becomes very sad.
The last thing you're left with is that he is dead, even though the character is alive The movie was supposed to be bittersweet, but it turned out being more bitter than sweet.

the thing called love part 1/12
The whole thing kind of reminds me a little bit of Stage Door in the hopes and dreams and the camaraderie shared among the hopefuls. Elisa Becker Instagram executives, if you read Silverado Film, please deliver this movie on DVD. The movie is Titanic German Stream and cheesy, but in the best ways. Kind of like an Elvis movie, without the bad country music. There is very little in the way of action apart from Miranda and James's drive to Graceland and their killing time before it opens by getting married. Wissenswertes. The whole love triangle was a good plot. Sandra Bullock made it have some funny parts. It's very cute and very enjoyable. I would recommend it to female especially because it is a chick flick mostly.
Whoever is a Elvis fan must go out and see this movie too. Even though it doesn't revolve around Elvis he has an important part in it.
I love the movie go out and see it. A very well made and true to life romantic comedy with realistic situations and characters and catchy songs.
The story is bittersweet and without easy answers yet still satisfying. Criminally underrated piece of Bogdanovich's career.
This is one of the most surprisingly bad movies I've ever seen. To think that the same man that directed The Last Picture Show also did this makes one wonder.
I just rented the Director's Cut and deeply regret the spent time and money. Interestingly enough Sandra Bullock and Dermot Mulroney are the only remotely positive aspects of the entire film.
Way too much praise has been given to River Phoenix for this role. I'll be the first to say that River Phoenix was an incredibly terrific actor in some films, but this film does not qualify.
The supposed chemistry between Mathis and Phoenix is shockingly forced and unrealistic. The film is generally boring and meanders pointlessly for an excruciating 2 hours.
I should mention that I was born and raised in Nashville and while the film isn't necasarily offensive in it's idea of what the city is like, it is obscenely unrealistic and a bit stereotypical to clarify; the line-dancing party the characters attend, I don't think they really exist.
Man, not even the lure of good looking babes and music could save this flea-ridden dog. Its my 4th sitting and I still can't get thru it. If I paid to see it in a theater I'd want my money back.
The blonde in this movie is making me contemplate a new gay lifestyle. Gad, I wouldn't marry her if Donald Trumps life depended on it.
I can't find anything redeeming about this flick. I want my money back from Blockbuster. Why do I need 10 lines to post this? Sandra Bullock has this bad fake southern accent that never quite makes it.
I'm still wondering what this movie is about. They were several reasons why I wanted to see this movie: 1. This one of River's last movies, if not the last before his tragic death and he does indeed look sick in this movie, skinny and all.
And it's a disappointing ending for his career as this movie is really too shallow on its subject. Samantha Mathis comes to Nashville seeking stardom as a country music singer.
There she meets with River Phoenix, Sandra Bullock and Dermot Mulroney, all with the same ambition, becoming the next country star.
River is the most successful of them it has to be noted they all sang their parts. If this movie's intention was to show how it goes in the music business, it missed.
If it wanted to show a love story, it missed too because it only scraps the surface of the subjects. If you want country music and a depiction on how Nashville works, check out Altman's "Nashville".
Watchable, yet quite disappointing Ripshin 8 May The two leads are completely miscast in this film, but it is still enjoyable. Although I never visited the Blue Bird, I did haunt a pub across the street, so the territory is familiar.
The Drake Motel, as well as the diner, are geographically somewhere else in the city. Mathis and Phoenix are overshadowed by Bullock and Mulroney in almost every scene, and even the minor role of Billy is more authentic.
KT Oslin is quite adequate in her role. Once, I had the pleasure of hearing Bogdanovich speak, and it was wonderful. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that his coverage of the Nashville scene is this superficial.
Strange, But Likeable statchmo 29 August I originally sought out this movie strictly because of River Phoenix's presence in it.
Strange to say, he is the least of the reasons to like it. Sadly, he seems both out of place, and out in space.
Too bad, because I think he is the weak link in what might have been a much better movie, had he been in any condition to lend his considerable talents to the proceedings.
Still, I find this movie strangely enjoyable. Mathis, Mulroney, and Bullock are all incredibly appealing, as are the music and surroundings.
And even though River's performance seems oddly hollow, you can't deny the chemistry between him and Mathis, nor take your eyes off of River when he's on the screen.
I'm not a country western music fan at all, but I am a huge fan of director Peter Bogdanovich. My affection for Bogdanovich extends beyond his work as a filmmaker, going back to his is days as a writer in the s when he took the time to interview Hollywood directors such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, or Allan Dwan; filmmakers who were nearing the end of their prolific careers and considered talented journeymen filmmakers suited to producing mere entertainment.
Bogdanovich helped bring legitimacy to these filmmakers as artists and as having a unique point of view. What I love about Bogdanovich as a filmmaker is that he brings a classic Hollywood sensibility to his films.
His approach to filmmaking is clearly influenced by his love of classic film and by his conversations with all of these talented early pioneers of cinema.
A bit of a love triangle occurs between lead characters, Mathis, Phoenix, and Mulroney, in a way that echo's many films of Howard Hawks, which Bogdanovich is quick to pick-up on.
More than the story or the performances which are good all around , I think I like most how Bogdanovich frames his shots.
He shoots his film in a way that looks like old Hollywood. I don't know if the film would look all that different to the casual viewer, but he frames his shots in a way that you could see Hedy Lamar or Cary Grant being shot, which is terrific fun for cinephiles.
Overall, as a tale of young folks trying to make it big and learning life lessons that eventually inform their songs and make them better musicians, it's a entertaining enough of a film, even if it falters at times, but watching the film as a heir to old Hollywood, "The Thing Called Love" is a is a real treat.
A sweet little number jandesimpson 30 April If the critics are to be believed, Peter Bogdanovich is one of those unfortunate directors who ran out of steam all too soon after a positively brilliant start.
True the early "The Last Picture Show" is a glorious recreation of young people coming of age in an American hick town nowhere in the '50's that he has never quite equalled since, although "Paper Moon" runs it pretty close.
Perhaps his big mistake was to try to catch up with "The Last Picture Show" folk in the best forgotten "Texasville". Great films are better left on their own without sequels.
But, this apart, it would be wrong to brand everything Bogdanovich has made in more recent years as inconsequential and therefore of little value.
Take "The Thing Called Love" for instance, a film that like "The Last Picture Show" concerns itself with a group of young people that are certainly more aspirational than those in the earlier film.

Singing and dancing along to the radio. It helps brighten my mood no matter what is going on in my day. This movie has the same effect.
River, Samantha, Sandra, and Dermot are all amazing in this one. I really like the songs in the movie. Plus, I get to hear the funny verses that Sandra sings, which is almost enough to make me watch it in and of itself.
There she gets a job working at a bar that features amateur open mic nights for song writers and singers to showcase their talent.
The two women become fast friends and even agree to share the same hotel room, as they are both trying to make it in the music biz.
These two men are at odds with one another, both vying for the attention of the lovely Miranda. James ultimately wins her affections, the two getting married in, of all places, an all night convenience store.
There's drama, romance, heartbreak, and excitement, plus a bit of failed cow tipping. That's right those fools tried to tip a cow.
However, they manage to make things works out in the end, with surprising results. I have always loved this movie. Now with the two short clips added back into the movie it makes more sense.
I always though there seemed to be something missin when James came back to look for Miranda. It is sad that this was River Phoenix's last finished movie.
You can see the love him and Samantha Matthias had for eachother on this film. The film itself is not like a world big hit.
But when I first seen it I was 13 and wanted to write music for a living. I used to play guitar and at the time I like country music.
At my newly acquired age of 37 years old I do not like country music as my taste have gone more worldly with tavel and age. Due to an injury I can no long play the guitar or sing.
