It's a simple, well-done revenge story with a nice slow-developing romance as the subplot. Meanhile, Alan Rickman, who was good at this sort of thing, plays the hated, despicable villain.
The movie is appealing because it has a good mixture of action and that is mixed, too, not just the same kind of fistfights or gun battles , romance, nice scenery and a little comedy thrown in.
There's also a little PC thrown in as the good guys help out the downtrodden Aborigines, victims of racism by Rickman and his henchmen.
Warning: this a rough film in parts with a couple of harrowing scenes, such as people being pushed off cliffs, Selleck brutally beaten several times and wild vicious dingoes threatening San Giacamo and a little baby, but the action never goes on too long.
All in all, I found it one of the more memorable westerns I've watched. If for nothing else, the awesome sound of Selleck's Sharp Calibre.

But you won't care. It is all carried off with a sense of humor, moved forward by the motivations of fully drawn characters.
The ability to provide a few laughs in the middle of some very harsh events is kind of astonishing. That is a very fine line, but Simon Wincer the director manages it all with a deft touch.
It really is remarkable. I highly recommend this film. It is easily the best thing Tom Selleck ever did on the big screen.
If you enjoy westerns and any fondness at all for Australia, this may be the perfect movie for you. Aw, who am I kidding When I noticed it had been released in a Blu Ray option, I jumped at the chance to order a copy, hoping the clarity would be that much better than DVD.
Possibly because I was watching the movie on an Ultra High Definition TV that may heighten imperfections, but quality of the video image did not appear improved beyond DVD quality.
Perhaps, this movie has not achieved critical acclaim enough to digitally re-master for Blu-Ray, but I wish they had. Meanwhile, I would still recommend purchasing this movie, and adjusting your Blu-Ray player to digitally Upscale the image.
This should greatly improve the image, and the enjoyment of watching this classic movie. A different take on the classic western.
The adventures begin when Quigley lands in Freemantle after a 3 month voyage from San Francisco, and gets a surprise introduction to Texas expat Crazy Cora Laura San Giacomo and Marston's rough and tough Irish cowhands.
Throw in some beautiful Western Australia scenery, some magical Aboriginal tribes people, well choreographed fight scenes, and plenty of correct period firearms, and it all adds to up an exciting Western drama that both men and women and most kids, though the language and violence may be too much for the younger ones , as it is also a low key Love Story!
The photography is splendid, and the acting consistently good. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves action plots and good drama.
This is one of my favorite films. I just watched it for the fourth time and I enjoyed it as much now as I did in when it was released.
It features action, adventure, gun play and love. Quigley travels to Australia to help a land baron kill wild dingo dogs, he thinks.
He is possibly the best marksman in the world at long distances with his custom made rifle. He was really hired to kill Aborigines. Quigley immediately hates his new boss and beats him badly in a fight.
This is really a good film with great actors and a well written film. The scenery is very panoramic and the story just flows. I love this film and I will probably watch it again in a few years.

Quigley is a champion long distance shooter brought to the wild west of Australia to help rid a wealthy rancher's pest problem with dingos.
When he arrives, he discovers the rancher has another "pest" in mind. Things get interesting quickly. Like I said, this isn't great movie making, but it is worth watching and it's fun.
While I am not big on Westerns, "Quigley Down Under" caught my interest because of its rather unusual setting, Australia.
An ad, placed in the newspaper draws a Cowboy from Wyoming to a station in Australia, believing that he is to kill Dingoes.
However, when he arrives, he finds his task is to kill Aborigines instead. When he refuses, he and Marston's argument ends with Marston literally being flung out of his house.
Quigley does make friends however. Crazy Cora is another American down on her luck and with a heartbreaking past and she latches onto Quigley, calling him Roy.
When they are captured by Marston's men and sent to the Outback to die, they are rescued by Aborigines and Quigley returns the favor when he and Cora manage to rescue an Aborigine child and finally returns him to his tribe after they see his people being shoved off a cliff by Marston's men whom Quigley picks off with his rifle.
In the final showdown with Marston, the irony of the gunfight is revealed when Quigley brings him down with a weapon Marston thought Quigley didn't know how to use.

Early on, Quigley get acquainted with and "assisted" by Crazy Cora Laura San Giacomo who seems to have a problem with reality depending on the day and who she believes Quigley to be at the moment.
