The storyline focuses more on character development and drama. Is it slow? Perhaps, but it's far from boring.
The script is great and original, the acting is superb, I found the whole movie tense and compelling It's highly annoying! The camera shakes even when characters are just casually talking to one another or walking down the street.
The idea is clever and well thought out. In any event, I disliked the ending. It seemed unfinished or even lazy to not tie it up better. I think the social issues between the cured and the survivors to be contrived and not very compelling.
It's a decent movie, but I think the story was just that. The unnecessary jump scares also degraded the experience. But then again, when are jump scared really necessary?
I don't really know what the point of those scary scenes were for. If the director was trying to make the audience scared, then they could found more creative ways to create fear than to just make a loud noise, or infected that have ostensibly have lost their ability to reason suddenly be able to be quiet enough to sneak around the corner and scream really loud and attack, yet in another scene an infected will scream from yards away letting you know they're there.
Are some infected better at being infected than other infected? Likely not, it was probably just the directer inadvertently creating dissonance in the movie by forcing fear with loud sudden noises.
This is a film that Irish audiences would probably connect with far more than anyone removed from Ireland - I have little knowledge of Ireland but even I was able to get that it's an extended metaphor for The Troubles.
I really have no idea how well that historical era and its relevant social politics intermesh with the zombie genre, but lacking that background prevented me from really connecting with this film.
I'd say it's mostly well-acted, and I liked some of it, but in subjective terms I'd probably rate it lower than the Dawn of the Dead remake. I gave it three stars because I don't have enough context to say it was badly made or written, just that it wasn't for me.
One of the better zombie movies. Ellen Page is very good, a very mature performance. The "cured" Conor reminded me of the head vampire in 30 Days of Night for some reason.
Great take on Zombie genre! I won't give anything away - just make sure to see this! The trailer for the film definitely portrays this movie in the wrong light.
If you start into the movie expecting a violent, action-packed zombie film, you're going to be disappointed. The film is more 28 Days later than Day of the Dead, and despite some long-winded and ridiculous exposition speeches, it's a great twist on the common zombie film: what if there was a cure, but it left you with the memories of the violence you perpetrated.
