At the start Hill and Tatum are teens attending the same school. Hill was the uncomfortable and awkward kid who got made fun of while Tatum was one of the cool kids, but who barely graduated.
When they go undercover however the roles are switched with Hill suddenly becoming popular and Tatum hanging out with the smart and nerdy kids.
This provided some rich comedy making fun of the typical high school-coming of age story. The plot also has a buddy element as Tatum and Hill two opposites bond and become real partners.
That takes time however as they form a relationship in police school, then become divided again when they hang out with different camps undercover in high school, and then come back together at the end.
Along the way they poke fun at the idea of the cop genre as well. For example, when they first go to work they end up being bicycle cops patrolling a park.
The movie is smart, hilarious and provides some rich satire. Highly recommended. I saw this when it came out, although I never saw the original 80's TV show.
Ice Cube is awesome, and the two bumbling cops are awesome. The good: the jokes come fast and furious, never really letting up.
The pace does drag a bit in the middle, but otherwise it's a true comedy movie. Ron Swanson brings a metal level of funny as well, and the whole cast is excellent.
The opening scene is a class. The not quite so good: as I mentioned, the movie does drag in the middle.
Other than that, I had no issues. A great comedy movie if you're feeling a bit down or want a laugh on Friday night after a long week at work.
Down on Jump Street! Depending on your age, that may mean nothing. I saw 21 Jump Street in the theater, I loved it, and so pre-ordering the Blu-ray was a no-brainer.
I loved Jonah Hill in Superbad, so I was not surprised that he did a great job in this. The real surprise was Channing Tatum whom I had always viewed as a bit of a vacant, dead-eyed hunk.
He still has that vacant look, but it totally works in this movie, and he proves he has a real talent for comedy. After graduating from the academy, being sub-par cops land the two in a strange undercover program that puts cops into local high schools.
Chief Hardy Nick Offerman does a great job of setting up the concept of the movie while at the same time berating Schmidt, Jenko, the plot of the movie itself, and the overall lack of creativity in recent Hollywood projects.
He was the first to admit he is the stereo-typical angry black man. Dickson puts Schmidt and Jenko on the case of finding a new synthetic drug called HFS look the acronym up yourself after a kid at the school dies from the drug, a fact no one at the school seems to care at all about.
Schmidt and Jenko find the dealer in with ease but the supplier proves to be a much harder task. Eric Molson Dave Franco is the environmentalist popular guy at school and the popular click takes a liking to Schmidt immediately where Jenko gets stuck with the nerdy kids because their identities get switched.
The role reversal was a brilliant comedic move and the bizarre situations are knowingly over-the-top but the comedy all ramps up and actually does contribute to the plot of the movie.
Jonah Hill comes from the complete opposite side of the industry than his co-star. Hill has been known for his comedies and most of them are quite funny.
The supporting cast is equally as funny as the lead actors despite their somewhat limited screen time. Franco has done some very funny material. Along with smaller roles in movies he also did a great series with his older brother for Funny or Die.
After 21 Jump Street he should be getting some more substantial comedic roles. The absolutely adorable Brie Larson plays the closest thing to a love interest this movie gets.
Schmidt falls for her the second he arrives back at school and she fell in line properly with the popular crowd. Larson is really the only character in the movie who got to show some range of emotion.
She is funny with the rest of the cast the majority of the time but she also plays the heart-broken school girl very well. Admitting that the movie was goofy and having the lead actors be just as goofy as the core concept let the audience sit back and really enjoy themselves.
It is funny from the opening shot to the end. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill make a brilliant comedic team.

It knew exactly what it wanted to be and succeeded fantastically. A pair of police officers who are the worst cops ever, no hyperbole go undercover in a high school to bust a drug ring.
This drug when taken has four unique phases which are portrayed on multiple occasions. They were funny as flip!
Phase 2 is the greatest, massive props to the guy who envisaged those hallucinations. The story is actually well-rounded, the role reversal of our lead characters was a pleasant watch.
The contrast of cliques from their past school life to the present made for some funny moments. I like the involvement of these cliques, the nerds were useful as opposed to just being picked on.
The forced scenes of "yayyyy friendship is important" are quite cringe-worthy and didn't flow with the rest of the narrative.
Channing Tatum was excellent, probably the first comedic role I've seen him in and he nailed it. Jonah Hill, who I notoriously dislike, was actually Now now, before you say "you finally like him Luke!
A nice surprise towards the end as well. The action scenes were filmed with some exhilaration, particularly the limousine chase.

I don't pre-order often, but I did with this one. It is such a fun, yet many times serious series; I was always impressed by the hot line promos after "issues" shows.
The characters and the actors playing them are great - very talented and a great mix. A few complaints though: 1 the DVD quality isn't the best, but I can live with it, 2 the replacement music isn't as good but if the producers couldn't get the licensing, I'm still glad they released the series, and 3 the one that really makes me cringe - the unrealistic euphemistic choice of words - "heck", "gosh", "gol darn", and some even worse I don't remember at the moment.
Oh please Nobody in my high school would ever have said "heck" and as you see from a statement in the next paragraph, I'm a bit older than the average mids teenager.
I was especially pleased to have the episode "Don't Pet The Teacher" on the DVD - I'd forgotten which year it originally aired, but of course my VCR or the tape or whatever messed up and I never got that one recorded; it was my favorite - I could have told you what the title of that episode was without having seen it listed or played even after all this time , having tried unsuccessfully to catch it on repeats at the time - so what a great surprise for me that it was in Season One!
The interviews were very good. And, while I always knew I was a good bit older than the show's usual viewers, I was somewhat horrified to hear the producer say that the targeted age group was oh dear God - I was 30 then and am 47 now!
Can't wait to watch Season Two! Season Three comes out in August! And although the show lost a bit of the magic it had when I was a giddy teenager, it still shone as a gritty, realistic cop show from the late 80's.
I too, was surprised and disappointed at the lack of the original soundtrack which included 80's songs from REM and Steve Winwood, among others.
I don't know what tone-deaf imbecile chose the awful soundtrack for the DVD version, but it's more than a little perturbing to me.
Background music makes a huge impact on any show, and it's a darn shame that the episodes could not be released in their original versions.
I was also somewhat disenchanted by the quality of the audio for the dialogue. It appears that there was a straight analog transfer from tape to DVD, and that there was no digital remastering whatsoever.
Don't get me wrong, the sound is loud and clear, just not the audio I was expecting for a DVD. There are also some choppy edits during the program, which makes this DVD look more home-made than professional.
But all my gripes don't amount to anything to surpass the quality of this top-notch show. For joy at the release of this much anticipated dvd!
I was so excited to find out that my all-time favorite tv series when I was a teen I enjoyed re-visiting the old cast, starring a much younger yet still HOT, Johnny Depp, with my daughters I mean, in all honesty, I don't recall much of the music from the original airing of the show but it's clear that the music was replaced Thank God the title song was untouched!!!
If I wasn't such a huge fan of the series, the music would have ruined this otherwise great dvd for me. Nevertheless, if you can grit your teeth through the horrible soundtrack - it's well worth the buy!

Ok, up front, I am an intense Johnny Depp fan. With that said, should I actually write anything else? Probably not but I will anyway. The series is as poignant today as it was in the late 80's.
If Hollie Robinson's hair could be tamed down a bit and Frederick Forrest's hippie talk was toned down a bit, it could probably play pretty well today.
Themes around teenage prostitution, drug dealing and using, pregnancy, the whole gamut of teen issues are covered in the series. It's not as sexual or violent as today's teen shows.
It's much less sophisticated, but just as meaningful. And then there is Johnny Depp. Baby faced and clean cut, he just can't make it as a beat cop.
No one takes him seriously! This is an exceptional opportunity to allow him to portray any number of characters as an undercover cop.
This is only the first season. It will be interesting to see how he develops as an actor through the rest of the series.

It's actually highly enjoyable and deals with a number of adolescent issues. The episodes are well paced and the characters are distinct and consistent.
The acting is of a high quality and of course it is intriguing to see a young Depp starting out. Report abuse. Speedy delivered and i loved watching it all again total blast from the past but unfortunately there was some damage to two of the disks.
Not surprising really given the age of them but it did interrupt viewing. One person found this helpful. My wife and I used to watch this when it was first on and recently watched the movie with my teenage kids.
I bought this to see if it was as good as I remembered or was I looking with rose tinted glasses! It is just as good - if not better!
