Little History I've long had a fascination with airships, and in particular the German Zeppelins, including the Hindenburg. I have read and watched virtually everything I can get my hands on on this topic.
And I have a decent library on the subject. This rendition is so fictionalized as to be silly. And so many liberties are taken with the story and the plot, that from an historical sense, what is portrayed here should be dismissed as fantasy.
About the only thing in agreement between this drama and the historical record, is that the D-LZ did in fact explode and burn at Lakehurst, NJ on May 06, And I'm giving it that because some of the imagery is very cool and I have a soft spot for that era The airship set itself, while not entirely accurate, is likewise very nicely, if not elaborately done.
There is another docudrama on The Hindenburg available on Amazon streaming that actually parallels history closely, and offers a believable performance as to what actually happened.
For the record, the Germans never made a formal request to buy helium from the US until after the Hindenburg accident.
That's a little detail that keeps getting turned around as the story is retold. And it evidently makes better drama to say that we denied the Germans the nonflammable helium, and therefore share in the responsibility for the disaster--but that just isn't true.
The Hindenburg's predecessor, the D-LZ Graf Zeppelin the D-LZ was never built had covered over a million miles carrying passengers with hydrogen, and the Germans had operated regional airlines inside Germany with hydrogen-filled airships with zero injuries or fatalities, for years.
The fact is, the Germans felt that they had mastered the dangers of using hydrogen, and pointed to their impressive performance history to support that assertion.
And hydrogen was cheap! And hydrogen was easy to make! At that time, the US had a monopoly on helium, and it was far from cheap!
Still, WWI had demonstrated how vulnerable a hydrogen-filled airship was to a willful attack And the Germans knew, especially given the world's response to the Nazi agenda, that their airships were vulnerable, and that helium would have to be procured at some point.
It is a fact that when the Hindenburg arrived here on May 06th, , there were many unoccupied cabins aboard.
Whereas the sailings of the previous year, both to the US and to South America, had been largely sold-out, in terms of passenger availability.
