As fun as the film is, I never thought it really came together story-wise. After reading the book, it becomes obvious how difficult it really was to make a narrative linear film out of the book.
The book is a series of whimsical adventures that don't necessarily connect to each other. There is no sense of progression from one chapter to the next--no sense that Mary Poppins is building on something through her series of games and fantasy world adventures with the kids.
Each chapter makes an entertaining story on its own and it is easy to pick up and put down as there is no overall arc of a story being told.
Banks, I had to read. These stories to discover just what his children found so wonderful that Disney made the promise to them to make the movie.
I was flabbergasted, and wished I had had them to read to my own children. Such wonders, such imagination, such profound truths, he could have indeed made a dozen movies instead of just one.
If you haven't read the books, do so, and read them to your children, grandchildren and so on. These stories must not be lost! Since I ordered a "used book" I was not sure how it would turn out, but it looked just like new.
I want to read it to some of my 32 grandchildren. One person found this helpful. Wish I'd known about this series when I was a lot younger!
