Brokeback Mountain is in no rush. Its emotional impact builds slowly, its rhythms in tune with the countryside--the rugged grandeur of the mountains; the arid, bleak vistas of backwater Western towns.

David Ansen. The approach is dry as the Wyoming landscape, and while it occasionally threatens to pull the film out of shape, it's still the right one for these men.

Like all great love stories, Ang Lee's is one of tragic romance, strongly acted by Heath Ledger as the most buttoned-up of cowboys, and Michelle Williams as his betrayed and enraged wife.

Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain is a stunning tale of forbidden love brought to life by two of the greatest actors ever. Heath Ledger's perfect accent and gravelly voice tremble with an inner turmoil over his feelings in one of Heath's best performances.

Jake Gyllenhaal is outstanding as the sensitive gay lover wishing for a better, open, and honest love life like he deserves. Both Ledger and Gyllenhaal deliver incredibly subtle and nuanced portrayals that I found deeply moving.

Brokeback Mountain is a romantic tragedy and gripping drama for any audience to appreciate. Lee's direction is awe inspiring from the gorgeous natural scenery to his clever framing of these two lovers.

His recreation of an older era and its biases is impressive on its own, but Lee breathes a passion for filmmaking with every shot.

Take any frame of Brokeback Mountain and you will see a perfect image. Lee's tender and affectionate hand gives the camera a respectful and understanding perspective for the lead's homosexual encounters.

Lee's direction is immaculate and thoughtful leading to pensive sequences of honest dialogue from Larry McMurty and Diana Ossana's touching script.

Brokeback Mountain is as much a journey of self discovery as it is a lens into the lives of two Southern men and their respective areas.

Lee shines a light on homophobia and ignorance with a scathing critique of intolerance. As much as Lee uses Brokeback Mountain to show support for the homosexual community and a decent sympathy for the hurt spouses of the characters.

Brokeback Mountain is well balanced between the sweet and uncertain romance and the tumultuous domestic life dramatic tension.

I adored Michelle Williams in Brokeback Mountain as much as the dual leading men. She is so expressive and heartbreaking with all her choices.

She uses a visual pain to display a hurt knowledge her character possesses without ever having to say what she knows out loud.

Williams gives a powerful performance and one of her most poignant as an actress. Overall, Brokeback Mountain is misunderstood as a film.

It does not deserve to be written off as the "gay cowboy movie," but should be appreciated for its careful plotting and brave depiction of gay love on a deeper level.

You really come to understand how these two men feel and how they feelings hurt those around them, while making themselves miserable for being away from one another.

The moving acting from Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are two for the ages! For the longest time I've avoided watching this film because of its status as "that gay cowboy movie.

One summer, in , they both work as ranch hands on Brokeback Mountain and in their isolation they develop a romantic relationship which continues for the next 20 years.

Of course, this is at a point in history when homosexuality wasn't tolerated, by and large, so the two of them have to keep their relationship a secret.

Both of them even get married and have children, but still manage to "go fishing" a few times a year. Still, Ennis and Jack are quite different people.

Jack is more open about his desire to settle down, while Ennis is more conflicted and, for the time, pragmatic.

While a lot of films that deal with homosexuality and gay themes often focus on the hardships and self-loathing, this one doesn't.

And as a period piece, a love story between two "out and proud" men wasn't really an option to begin with.

I also liked how the material wasn't sensationalized by being too explicit. There's a couple of gay sex scenes, but the film mostly focuses on the two characters and their developing relationship.

I should also mention the supporting cast, a few of whom I was surprised to see but not in a bad way. There was Randy Quaid as J. Aguirre, the manager of the ranch that Ennis and Jack work for that summer in He only had a few scenes, but he did a really good job with his limited screen time.

Since the film is mainly about Ennis and Jack, the supporting cast doesn't get as much to do, but it was so well-written and acted that it was ok.

Also worthy of mention is the beautiful cinematography and gentle score which complement the story quite nicely.

The only fault I can find is that the film goes on for a little too long, like they weren't sure how to wrap it up.

Just put aside your preconceived notions and give it a try if you haven't already. This is a piercingly beautiful movie, plain and simple.

At first I was reluctant to watch it, for a "gay cowboy" movie, as a few people called it, is not necessary my preferred cuppa.

But I was cajoled and then was so deeply touched that I ordered the movie to add to my small collection. The acting is superb, the scenery beautiful, the story tragically believable and the background music lovely.

Ang Lee outdid himself, as did the entire cast. The absence of love in relationships is explored in all its nuances, made all the more poignant by the depth of love portrayed in the relationship between the two male leads.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy of this stunning film is that Heath Ledger, a brilliant actor, is no longer with us, for his portrayal of a confused and love-stricken man was so sensitive and convincing that it made me yearn to see more of him in other movies.

Please consider putting aside any reservations you may have about this movie and see it. It's a heart, as well as an eye, opener.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Visually this film is beautiful. But you expect that from Ang Lee, right?

Also beautiful is the acting. Heath Ledger really was an amazing actor and his is the standout performance here. He gives the character of Ennis enormous depth.

Which is not to say that Jake Gyllenhaal is less than excellent in this. He brings a vital energy to the film. Also very good are both Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams as the wives of the two star crossed lovers.

It's worth watching the film for the acting alone. And for anybody but the most narrowminded viewers, there is at the very least food for thought in this story of forbidden love.

The portrait of the s American West with it's societal norms and prejudices seems rather accurate. The thinking audience can't help but wonder how many people could have been spared how much misery in a more tolerant society where people aren't Excellent film on every level.

Load of bonus features too. I watched a documentary about Heath Ledger recently and I'd forgotten what a great character actor he was.

This DVD was pence from a hospice charity seller using Amazon and I've really enjoyed watching it again. Ledger's performance is so understated; it's superb.

Gyllenhall and Anne Hathaway are also compelling and at times the tension and undercurrents that run through the tale are almost palpable.

A pile of interesting bonus features with this film including the actors discussing their preparation for the role, Ang Lee on directing, the making of the film and interviews with the scriptwriters.

All very interesting. Really enjoyed this and will watch again sometime. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver emotionally charged, remarkably moving performances in "a movie that is destined to become one of the great classics of our time" Clay Smith, 'The Insider'.

Brokeback Mountain ranks 13th among the highest-grossing romance films of all time. In fact the whole film is a rich, spacious, passionate way of showing, not telling, feelings that dare not speak their name - and doing so with superb intelligence and magnificent candour.

The story of 'Brokeback Mountain' is by now familiar to all except those who have been living under a rock for the past few years.

It is sometime in the early '60s, and ranch hands Ennis [Heath Ledger] and Jack [Jake Gyllenhaal] take a job herding sheep one winter up on Brokeback Mountain.

Completely bewildering, even to themselves, the natural bonding of men in close quarters leads to something more passionate and physical.

There is little doubt in the minds of either Ennis or Jack that whatever happened up on the mountain, will stay on the mountain.

Over the next dozen-odd years, they will lead "conventional" lives: marrying, having children, and assimilating into a society that doesn't even have a word for what "they are.

Inevitably, their repressed love exerts such a powerful need to declare itself that cracks will begin to form in their facade, to the point of tearing the fabric of their lives apart.

I suppose at this point it is no spoiler to say that all does not end well and is a very sad scenario. Thrown together, lonely and frustrated, Ennis and Jack find that their relationship has grown deeper and fiercer than friendship and they have sex.

It is a glorious, revelatory experience, and safe from society's disapproval on that remote Arcadian spot they are at one with their own natures and with nature itself.

There are many theories why 'Brokeback Mountain' was a massive success, but I don't think there is one clear answer. I do feel that essential to its success is the fact that this is the first "gay" movie to never actually utter the word.

It is the only film I have ever seen mainstream or otherwise, that simply accepts its character's orientations as fact.

Jack and Ennis simply are.
