Great suspense, which is a tribute to the actors themselves and secondarily how they are directed and filmed. At some points I literally stopped breathing in anticipation of what would happen next.

The best suspense is always relationship driven. And again, the acting in this film by the entire cast, but especially the leads is fantastic.

One very minor issue, that of the title and end credit music. Satire doesn't come across well usually and especially since the story and film itself were not at all satire but actually very serious.

The music for both were just poor choices. I understand the director's intent but geez a major lost opportunity. What gorgeous haunting heartbreaking music could have been written to surround this outstanding film.

Especially since whoever composed the score for the film itself was inspired and did beautiful work.. Well worth your attention and your time.

Probably a Wikipedia entry would suffice, so don't complain about the apparent obscurity of the context. Look it up. I was surprised by how The Exam drew me in right away.

Taking place on the day before Christmas with most action taking place on one street and in two apartments, it is a measured study of deception and paranoia that questions patriotism and personal trust.

Jung, a young teacher, is also a government agent who has various citizens reporting to him, telling him what happened and who was there and was there any subversive activity.

He in turn must report to others. Loyalty to the Communist party must be upheld and every citizen is suspect. Surveillance is rife and one can never be sure if someone -- a friend, a teacher, a lover -- is what they claim to be.

Every citizen will be tested for loyalty -- and they will not know when this exam is being given. I don't want to give away plot lines or twists, but suffice it to say that, yes, we learn very early in the movie that Jung is being tested, but there is more going on than we perceive.

The ending was jolting. Superb movie with great acting and suspense throughout. A very good movie about how the secret service workers used to do their job and advance in powerful positions during communism.

People coming from "the eastern block" will remember exactly how this was happening in their countries at that time. At least they were letting the Hungarians celebrate Christmas but in Romania under Ceausescu's era the Christmas celebration was pushed to the 29th of December and was called completely different.

The dialogue is so shockingly bad at first I honestly thought it was like a satire or parody film. Concepts are thrown at the audience without the filmmakers actually knowing anything about the concepts.

Red Herrings are in every single scene, to the point where everything is just kind of meaningless. Exam is a flawed but fun little mystery that has enough original ideas behind it to keep it going pretty nicely for the most part - but then predictably doesn't know what to do with its ending.

An opening credits montage of each of the candidates sets things up very impressively indeed, and although it has to fight past two or three pretty sub-standard performances, a delightfully slimy and smart-arsed Luke Mably and a suave effort from Jimi Mistry cancels these out.

Far from perfect and with one or two gaping plot holes they have some pretty strange interpretations of 'don't ruin your paper' but still pretty good.

There's a risk of me giving away spoilers if I write anything more than main plot in this movie; which is that there are eight people in a guarded room, they're all after a job, they're given a task of answering a question within 85minutes with instructions of not destroying the paper, not talking to the guard or leave the room.

But the paper they all have in front of them is blank. What's the question? And what is their responses to this mindfuck of a test. Exam is definitely one of those "hidden gems" you can find on Netflix.

This movie is pretty much a job interview nightmare, and watching the candidates struggle with the task in front of them is very interesting.

Of course, since this is a thriller, the tension escalates and things start getting out of hand as the time of the clock is running out.

However, I was on board with this until the reveal — the ending just didn't feel satisfying, and left me thinking "Really?

That's where you went with this? That being said, I would definitely recommend Exam to anyone looking for a quick and unusual thriller — it's absolutely worth checking out, and it will keep you trying to figure out the problem along with the characters.

Daily Horror Hunt 24 - June Horror Used the list, didn't check the genre--if I have time I'll watch another. This was fine, and actually almost too relaxing of a thriller for me.

Might have dozed off once. I never do that. It was a nice mind bender with decent enough acting. If you like puzzles, you'll have fun with this.
